Syracuse Post Standard Monday 3 JAN 1927 RUPPERT FOUND DEAD FROM GAS Housekeeper Discovers Body of Chef Beside Stove in Kitchen SEEMED IN GOOD SPIRITS Victim Visited With Friends in Evening Before Going to Apartment. After visiting with friends New Year's night, Frederick Ruppert, 48, of 307 Madison street ended his life in the kitchen of his apartment by inhaling illuminating gas. He had been in failing health. Mrs. Olive Cartner, 416 East Adams street, Ruppert's housekeeper, discovered the body lying across a chair near a gas range when she called at the apartment at 10 o'clock yesterday morning, as was her daily custom. She was accompanied by her son, William Cartner. Ruppert was fully dressed and a tube which was connected with the gas range lay across his body. His coat and hat were found on the kitchen table. He left no message and friends who talked with him late New Year's night said he appeared in the best of spirits and talked of getting up early in the morning to keep an engagement. Mrs. Cartner notified police headquarters immediately after discovering the body and Acting Detectives Hennessey and Holland visited the rooms, later notifying Coroner William R. Winne. The body was taken to the county morgue. Ruppert had been employed as a chef in an East Genesee street restaurant. Surviving are three sons living in Syracuse, and a brother in Boston, Mass. Herbert Ruppert, 103 East Kennedy street, a son, wired the brother last night and funeral arrangements will be held up until a reply is received. Frederick's Funeral Service was conducted at 2pm by Rev. Knappenberger in the Morgue Chapel. As Herbert Rupert Sr stated "It was storming terribly outside when we went in but when the sermon was started the sun came out and a big beam fell accross the casket, and the sun remained out till the casket was put in the vault, then the sun went behind the clouds and it started storming harder than ever again." Cecil, Ada, Jack and Herbert Rupert Sr attended the service. Note: Rev James B Knappenberger was Minister born in Pennsylvania 1856.
